Project 1 - Animated Infographic

For this project, we are tasked with selecting a pre-existing poster that is either bad or a poster that can still be improved. I have a few candidates to select from but I decide to pick this particular poster to improve upon.

Fig 1. You Are A Target

The reason I choose this particular poster is that this poster has blocks of sentences and gives out a lot of information in one poster. In addition, the different colors of the poster are very saturated and clashes with one another. This causes the poster to pull attentions of viewers into multiple attention.

The first thing I do is to look for reference of other poster in order to get an idea on what the poster should look like. In order to stick with the topic, I use other cybersecurity related poster as my references.

References

Here are the references I have collected:

Sketches

From the references, I start to sketch out on what the eventual poster approximately looks like and sketch down a few versions of the poster to see which one works and which doesn't. Here are the sets of sketches I have made.

Digitalization

From the sets of sketches that I have, I choose the first poster of the first set as I personally find that this iteration would help convey the message better with it's simpler design. I have also made a few changes with the paragraph arrangement and split them into a different column. In addition, I also add some icons onto the poster to visualize each idea and title.

This is the first draft of my poster:

Once I have show the work in progress to Mr. Fauzi and that he provided the feedback, I apply them to the poster. The feedback I received is to come up with a different color scheme so that the color won't just be a singular tone. To do that, I went on this website to look up on the color scheme on this website. Here is the link: https://colorhunt.co/

I select this specific color scheme and then apply it to the poster. I mostly based the color on the color base on the biggest color tone (blue color for the background) to the smallest (yellow for the text).

And here is the final result for the still image poster:

Animation

The final stage of this project is to start creating the animated version of the poster. The requirement says that it has to be a looping animation that last between 15 sec - 30 sec. Looking at the still image poster, I determine that the icon and the image background would be animated.

Just as a sample for some explanation, here is how I animate two of the icons. The first one I would like to explain is the email. First, I add in the cover of the mail; one is closed and the other opened. The cover will be overlapping with one another.

Once the shape is made, I then provide the masking onto the email icon and then animate mask movement to give an illusion that the mail opens and closes.

For the robot icon, create different eyes and stack them on top of one another. One of them is a plus sign, the other a multiply sign and then the circle sign. I use the opacity to make each layers of eye appear and disappear. In order to make the transition instant, I also use the graph editor.

Once I have animated all the icons and the images, this is resulted in this first draft:

Once again, I show my progress to Mr Fauzi and gather feedback from him. From there, I apply all his feedback to the poster and thus, here is the final result:

FEEDBACKS

Week Six

Use a different color scheme and add the contrast to the poster.

Week Seven

To cut down on the words of the animated poster (format is okay in print form but not suited in short form video), the still image poster can be different from the animated version. The title 'You Are A Target' didn't give any clue what the poster is about in first glance.
