FINAL PROJECT - PHYSICAL SEQUENCE ANIMATION

This is the final project for Fundamental Animation. In this project, we are tasked with using the same character that we designed from the first project, similar to that of project 2. This time, the character would be doing an action, whether it be fighting, running, chasing etc. At the start of the animation process, we have to plan out the action before we can start animating.

The lecturer has recommended us to use motion actor video for reference on the character and suggested a particular youtube channel. I have chosen this specific video for a reference:

Fig 1. Motion Actor - Log Combo

I specifically choose this as my reference as the character uses a large hammer as his primary weapon and this weapon tends to be heavy. Most of the available video given from this channel are sword related or light weapon related and this is closest video to a usage of heavy weapons.

From there, I sketch out a storyboard for the character to take action in while referring to said video.

Then, I start to draw the rough animation of the project. This is the result of the rough animation:

After I finish the rough animation, the next stage is the tie-down where I add in much more details and include the actual appearance of the character.

This includes the outfit, the hair and facial hair and clothing pattern and body parts to replace the circle for a more solid formation. I also add inbetweens in this stage of animation.

After that, that's when I reach the cleanup stage of the animation where I made a few adjustments on certain body parts that don't look right. It is at this stage however, I only realized that the animation is too short and does not reach the five second requirement. So I add more scenes near the end where the building collapse as a last minute addition to extend the duration of the animation. Aside from that, this is essentially a redraw of the outlines with minor adjustments to parts that don't look right.

Once I'm done with the clean up, it's time for the finalization of the animation which includes adding in the colors, background and the sound effect or music into the animation. The planned style for the character has a colored outline so that has to be redraw again but with a much proper color. In this stage, I only focus on the the block color.

After that, the next stage of the process is to add the background for the animation. For this project, I use the location created in the previous project which is the bar but due to time crunches, I have to make a much simpler version of the environment which could ensure that character to stood out from the scene.

The next stage of animation is adding a shading to the character to give it a much better depth instead of a simple flat looking character. I have determined the light source to be from the fire place for a more easier process.

Once I've finish up all the animation process. The next and final step of this project is to add audio/music into the animation. I gather my audio from this website: https://freesound.org/

I download all the audio and the stitch them together in a video.

REFLECTION

The final project takes a very long time to complete. It's rather interesting how much of a work that goes into an animation that lasted only five seconds and yet it takes days to animate. There are a few caveats though, considering that I've only just started to do 2D animation and this fact may have play a part in why the development has be rather slow for a 5 second animation. Perhaps once I get used to animating, my speed may increase dramatically. Of all the process of animation, I find the coloring part of animation to be the most time consuming as of now. Doing extensive project like this also make me realize that adobe animate as a program has certain flaws that I would otherwise have not notice which may lead to the already elongated process.

I personally wouldn't say that I'm proud of the result but it certainly is start and my first stepping stone into creating something that I'm real proud of.
