EXERCISE 1 - QUANTIFIABLE INFORMATION

For the first exercise of information design, we are to buy sort-able objects such colored candies, clips, lego brick etc and sort them out into several stages of graphs. For this particular project, I am using skittles to sort them into posters.

Once I have gather all of the skittle onto a large A3 paper, I sorted each of them into different color and here is what I have gathered.

Once I have sorted them, I rearranged them into different shapes to ensure it looks much more neater. This also the stage where I realize that the candy is arrange similarly to blade of a wind turbine, so I decide to do the chart related to wind turbine.

Once I have arranged them neatly to one another, the next stage is to present them visually on the A3 graph. This is also the part where are start to use marker to write down the categories for each of the data. I sort them depending on the color of the candies.

Then finally the last stage of creating informational graph is to explain it with a story. In order to achieve this, I decide to arrange the candy in a wind turbine shape and rearrange some text.

EXERCISE 2 - L.A.T.C.H INFO GRAPHIC POSTER

For this particular exercise, we are tasked with creating a poster and arranged the data according to something called the LATCH theory. LATCH theory provides guidance on how to organize data into a structure that makes sense. LATCH stands for Location, Alphabet, Timeline, Category and Hierarchy.

The first step of doing this assignment is to look for data to be turned into a poster. Eventually, I found this particular website:

For this particular subject, the data will be organized using hierarchy, particularly the popularity as indicated in the website.

The next thing to do is to draw some sketches of the potential posters. Here is what I have drawn:

Fig 1.2 Poster Sketch 2

I am still undecided on which design I should pick for the poster so I digitalize the ones I believe to be suitable for the potential poster as well as adding the actual data of the poster. I have selected three of the design and fit them according to the size requirement.

The color are random and has no coherent order so I look up on the color scheme in order to have it look much present. I use this website to find the color scheme:

Specifically, I choose this color scheme:

I select the third poster design and then apply color palette and graphics and it become the final result.

REFLECTION

In this stage of the module, I believe that the whole lesson of this exercises is how to handle the data sorting and arrange them in a structure and order for a better readability for the user. After a few look at my final results of both exercises, I find that the design is not of satisfactory and I feel that something is missing from the design. If I were to take a guess, I believe what is missing is the interest factor for the poster. Although I have previous experience with poster design, it has been awhile and it could take a bit to warm up on poster design. Perhaps I can revisit my previous blog about poster design and apply it to my new project.
