PROJECT 4 - CHARACTER MODELING
This is the final project for this module and we are assigned to create a 3D
modelling of our own character. The lecturer has encouraged us to find blue
prints of characters on the website due to time constraints and not having
enough time to design our own characters. Since Courage the Cowardly Dog is
was my favorite cartoon as a child, I decide to pick a character from there.
My original plan is to create a 3D model of Muriel so I download the character
turnaround sheet of her. Here is what I've download:
Fig 1.1 Character Turnaround Sheet of Muriel
As I tried to model her out, I begin to struggle with creating the model after
her and have not been able to figure out how do so, especially her head area.
Looking up online for guides proves to be rather fruitless so I change my
character to go for Courage himself instead. So I download the turn around
sheet of him.
Fig 1.2 Character Turn Around Sheet for Courage
I start of with a cylindrical shape for the body of Courage including the
head for him, his arms and legs are made using a combination of a cylinder
and UV sphere, his ears are made from cylinder and his tail is made from a
plane.
It is a rather challenging to model out a character that is design merely
for 2D animation, especially with placement of the ears and the eyeball. In
the end, I simply decide to put the eyes in the front while the ears would
follow the character turnaround sheet.
Once I'm done with the modelling, I apply an appropriate color for the
material and used the UV unwrap that I've learnt in class in order to
texture paint the two dots at the back of Courage. I also use the same
technique to draw his eyes.

Once I finish up the model, I decide to create the setup for the character.
Originally, I wanted to do a model where Courage stands in front of a dark
doorway looking at the camera and inside the doorways is a monster. However,
the instruction and the example given about this project does not seem to
recommend something of this sort so I scrap the idea and just go for a
simple idea of him standing in the rooms instead.
To make up for the lack of theme, I decide to use the wallpaper of the
living room setting of the TV show and is unable to find any suitable
wallpaper for the project so I decide to create on myself using free drawing
app, Krita.

Once I'm done, I apply the three point lighting which is what is suggested
in the instruction. I actually have no idea what a three point lighting is.
So I look it up and found this on Youtube:

Following the instructions, I then do the set up as show here:

REFLECTION
By doing this project, I have found that I am not really good in modelling character and have difficulty in modelling them. I even struggle to model Courage at time and I'm not sure how to got about it from a simple shape. There is clearly a lot to learn in order to master the sue of blender but I'll leave it for future project. Overall though, it is a good experience to have and perhaps in the future project, I'd be more prepared to animate actual character. My only wish is that we have more time to learn about blender as three months does not seem to be enough when it come to learning blender.
