PROJECT 3 - DESIGN

For the final project, we are tasked to create a design based on the reference image and selected SDG as well as applying basic design principle to the design. It is of utmost importance that the final design should have a connection or seem to be inspired by the reference design.

Sketches

I started out with doing a sketch of the original reference material as a starting point of my inspiration. I wrote down a brief text on the side to determined what is to be added for the final design: "Pandemic Makes Rich Man Richer".

I first sketch out the idea of a rich man surrounded by viruses and is protected by a mask made out of cash.

I then went on to do another sketch of the rich man sitting inside a luxurious exterior drinking wine and beside him is a 'cut' virus that grows out money tree while the world is shown by the window to be overwhelmed by the virus, following the brief text.

Then I take inspirations on having the virus as a 'water body' and draw the rich man relaxing on a float while people are drowning in the background, hands reaching out.

Fig 1.3 Third Sketch (10/03/2024)

Another sketch I did is just about the same as the reference image except in a different angle and more design principles are applied to the design.

Fig 1.4 Fourth Sketch (10/03/2024)

My final sketch is the rehash of my fourth sketch but with body floating instead of a singular hands and face submerged in water. This is my attempt to create some sort of symmetry balance to the design. Ultimately, this is the design that I chose to digitalize.

Digitalization

I insert the picture of my sketch and begin to digitalize the design while trying to mimic the style of the reference material. For my final design, I use Photoshop to draw the illustration.

By the time class arrive, this is the result I shown to gather feedback:

Since Mr. Zeon has not completely reject this design. I continue making improvement in the design as well as applying the feedback I was given about the design. By the end of it, I have the final result.

Final Result

Fig 4. Pandemic Makes Rich Man Richer (11/03/2024)

Rationale

This design uses various design elements from the reference design and conveys it in a much different way. I used the idea of a ‘body of viruses’ to convey the pandemic itself as well as struggling people below the surface, trying to reach out, both of which are present in the original reference.  I also based my art style to the original reference material. My design shows that the rich man can stay afloat on a ‘money float’ effortlessly with wine on the side while other people sink into a hole open among the virus, displaying an increasing inequality between classes which is a concern brought by UNSDG 10: Reduced Inequality. This design incorporate movement using a line of viruses that leads towards the rich man. It also uses contrast using the colour yellow, proximity is applied by the virus and struggling people, both the rich man and a float and the struggling people and the hole creates a symmetrical balance, repetition is applied to the virus in the background and harmony is applied to various shading in the illustration.

FEEDBACK

The design is not bad but it can still be improved upon. You can switch the image of the woman with a hole, with people trying to crawl out of it. On the left side of the rich man, maybe try to add something. Add shading around the glass of wine.

REFLECTION

I personally find project three to be my favorite among the other two projects. Although analysis is one of the important parts of designing, it is one of my least favorite compared to executing the design itself. Designing this illustration has help me improved my drawing skills and has encourage me to do more of the design of this art style.
