LECTURE

Visual analysis is defined as a method of understanding the design elements and design principle of a design. It is an explanation and description of visual structure. Visual analysis helps to acknowledge the choices that the designer makes as well as understanding the message of the design and how it send out the message.

There are three phases of a visual analysis: observation, analysis and interpretation.

Observation

Observation is define as describing the design and artwork as it is. It is to describe what can be seen in a certain poster and identifying the visual elements. In this phase, design are not read into.

Analysis

Analysis further elaborate on the visual observation and focuses more one why visual elements are the way they are. Usually includes explanation of what design principles are featured in the design and the flow of the overall design and effects the design have on the viewer.

Interpretation

Interpretation combines both observation and analysis into actual facts surrounding the design and provides context on what the design means. The purpose of the design can also be state here.

Project 2 - Visual Analysis

For our second project, we are to investigate, analyze and document the chosen design work selected in the first project. We are to study the design principles of the artwork, size, placement, purpose and effectiveness of a design in relations to UNSDG goal that we have chosen from Project 1.

Visual Analysis

As a recap, here is the artwork I have chosen for project 1 and 2:

Observation

This design is in a portrait orientation. At the centre of the artwork lies a pile of sacks with dollar sign labelled on each bag indicating the content inside. On the top of the pile, there is a well-dressed man standing while sipping a glass of champagne and there is a glass bottle in an ice bucket near the feet of the man which hints at what the man is drinking. At the bottom of the pile and parts behind the pile is a large body of micro-organism. Among the bodies are people reaching out. This artwork mostly uses green and light brown colour scheme, and most elements uses thick, black lines. (112 Words)

Analysis

The overall look of this design is generally balance especially on either side of the invisible fulcrum which are equally spread, and it’s considered to be proximately symmetrically balanced. There is a major emphasis in the centre or centre-bottom of the design, particularly the stack of money bags and the man in black as they use contrast of colour to help stand out from the mainly green background. These elements may look a lot more upsize especially when they have close proximity with one another which also represents another object, the stack of money bags indicate a small island while the large group of microorganism gather around and symbolize as a large ocean and wine symbolize luxury. Interpretation

The style of this illustration is satirical illustration, which is a genre of media that uses humor, irony and exaggeration to critique or mock something, usually political, social or cultural issue ('Satire', N.A.), which reflects just about all his illustrations such as image A shown below. In comparison, image B is also a form of satirical illustration but from different artist. This makes sense as Tjeerd Royaard is an editorial cartoonist who creates illustration for a Dutch newspaper company by the name of Trouw which means Faith and is started by the Dutch Protestant resistance during the German occupation of World War 2 ('The Illegal Press', n.d.) and newspapers are known to use satirical illustration to illustrate long article. FEEDBACK

Elaborate more on your analysis of the work. For your interpretation, look for the artist's previous other work and explain the context surrounding the artwork you have chosen. Include a reference for your interpretation

REFLECTION

For this part of the project, it seems that the goal of this side of the project is to practice giving an artwork a full analysis. What I have found interesting is that the analysis isn't just a one paragraph description of the design work but a triple step deal. I have been aware of how analysis work but have no idea there are more than just one step. I have also learn that the background context of the design also matters, even if you can't see it in a glance.
