PROJECT 4

Sketches
In the finale of illustration and visual narrative, we are to continue with our project three. Using the same story we did in project three, we are to create an introduction to the story with a one page visual novel, essentially an animated comic based on the story we have picked. In the previous project, I pick the story call The Pit and The Pendulum which is what I will based on for my comic.

As research were done in the previous project, I went ahead and start doing my sketches. Here I have create a few sketches.

The first sketch is to figure out how the prison and character look like but the prison become irrelevant when I read the briefing, seeing introduction and have to based on one paragraph. I interpret that as creating a comic base on the first paragraph which is what I did.

Digitization
As I start to digitize, there are a few additional elements I have added while illustrating. I have added more hooded figure on the first panel as a guard who is close to the prisoner and the final panel has hands reaching out to the prisoner, about to grab him.

After creating the base of it, I try to maintain the same style of the comic by giving the same lighting and gradient technique I use in project 3 and apply it to this comic.

I reconsider changing the last panel and figure maybe I go for a metaphor of some sort. In the original story, the last thing that the narrator sees is the candle before he falls unconscious. So I decide to add that as my panel along with some of the dialogues.

Eventually I have finish the dialogue and change the third last panel where he collapse onto table instead of the floor as that makes much more sense than a candle dropping from nowhere. With that, I have the final still comic result.

Animation
Now I have arrive at the final stage of project 4. The requirement state that we need to animate at least one panel. I originally wanted to try to animate more than one panels on adobe after effects using knowledge I have learnt from other classes. However, I face a low quality problem and I have no idea how to solve this. Instead of using adobe after effect, I decide to use the only other animation techniques that I know of, a frame by frame animation with Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop.

Here is the out come of my animated GIF

Then I return to adobe illustrator and add in the closing eye lid to the scene to convey the narrator has become unconscious.

After I have finish the animating the panel, I proceed to combining the still image of the comic with the animated panel together using Adobe Photoshop. The method is quite similar to animating. After that I have the final result.

REFLECTION

I find that this project can lead one astray the most as this assignment takes place way after the semester ends with not much consultation which can pose a challenge, especially when animation is not taught in Illustration and Visual Narrative class. Of course you can always ask for clarification which not everyone thought to do including me. This project has taught me a valuable lesson to always ask the lecturer if there is ever any moment of doubt to avoid misunderstanding. It also taught me that sometimes to create a great artwork, one must also gather knowledge from beyond the classroom.
