Illustration and Visual Narrative
LECTURE
Week 9 - Light and Shadow
In the ninth week of illustration and visual narrative, we start to learn how
to add shadows to our illustration. Mr Hafiz taught us how to use the knife
tool to create various shading of objects. We even to create a pear and shade
it.
PROJECT 2
Research
As our second project of illustration and visual narrative class, we will
have to create an illustration poster and enter a 'MyTIGER values art
competition' based on sustainable development goals and Maybank's value. For
this project, I decide to pick SDG 13: Climate Action as my poster theme.
Here are a few research information I have found regarding SDG 13 and TIGER
values.
Fig 1 Sustainable Development Goal 13 Infographic
The MyTIGER values are a bunch of values that a local bank, Maybank strive
to have. It uses TIGER and their acronym and it also happens to be their
mascot.
T stands for Teamwork
I stands for Integrity
G stands for Greatness
E stands for Excellence and Efficiency
R stands for Relationship Growth
Going through these information, I have determine that the values that works
well with SDG 13 is either Teamwork, Growth and Relationship Growth. To
emphasize on working together in order to prevent climate change.
As part of the process, I start to research for visual references and
posters references in order to develop inspiration for my poster. Here are
only a few examples I have collected:

Sketches
After collecting more than enough inspiration, I went on to do my sketches
and this is what I got.
Fig 3.1 Poster Sketches (3/05/2023 Week 5)
This is all I have done until the first consultation came and I have not much
to show but this, along with my reference material. Mr. Hafiz then suggest to
me that to create a poster using typography expression, just like project 1
exercise 2. So I went back to the drawing pad and start sketching a new
design.

Digitization
The next step of the process is to digitize it. I drag a picture of the
sketch into adobe illustrator and start to digitize it. First I create the
background with the sea and a grey background.
Fig 4.1 Illustrating the Sea (13/05/2023 Week 6)
Fig 4.2 Creating a grey rectangle for the background (13/05/2023 Week 6)
Then I begin to illustrate the graphics of each and every letter of 'RISE
UP'. Each graphics are rectangular. I decide to make them all flat and
simple as too much detail can make a design 'crowded' especially when look
from a far. Then I create the shape if the letters. I place the graphics
behind each letters and create a masking clip. Then I repeat for all the
other letters.

Fig 4.4 Turning a graphic into masking clip (27/05/2023 Week 8)
After I have illustrated all the letters, I went on to create the 'wave'
below the letters to indicate that the bottom of the letters are slightly
submerged in water. I also create a smaller rectangle behind the wave to
cover up the visible parts of the letter. Then I add gradient to the ocean
and the small rectangle and try to match them up with gradient tool.

Once I'm done, I proceed with illustrating dark cloud hanging over the
letters. I then add a text box saying
'and stop climate change together' below the letters.

Once I finish, I make a few small changes and make sure the design works
such as adding gradient to the grey background.

REFLECTION
This is perhaps one of the most challenging project in illustration and visual narrative. Not because the works itself is hard but because this project involves entering an art competition which makes the assignment feel much more official in a way. I personally don't really like competition and would never enter one by myself especially since design and art as whole is quite objective in nature. Getting into this assignment pushes me outside my comfort zone by participating in a competition. I can see some merits of how competition could help boost one's career now that I have experience being part of a competition despite my opinions about competition not changed.
